March 21 2009 | Mens 3rd XI vs Mansfield | 6-1 Win

Lichfield thirds travelled to play bottom of the table Mansfield this week. Playing a side that had lost all their previous games this season seemed an easy task on paper but, due to the early start, Lichfield were fielding a much changed side.  When one of the players decided that he wasn't going to play - but neglected to inform the team - the job became a bit harder.

But there was no ned to worry.  The 10 man city side started strongly, playing the ball around and creating scoring opportunities seemingly at will.  Two strong strikes from Richard Hepworth gave them a two goal lead within the first 5 minutes and they never looked like losing it.

Captain Dave Thrussell scored the third, running on to a great through ball and slotting it under the diving keeper with a first time strike.  Two more from Dan Smith and Dom Roberts made it a 5-0 scoreline at half time.

As is often the way though Lichfield then took their foot off the pedal.  Individual players were trying to overcomplicate things against the weaker opposition and the team lost it's shape and attacking bite.

A simple tap in at the back post by Thrussell completed the scoring for Lichfield, who were disappointed to see Mansfield grab a consolation goal before the end.

Excellent Debuts from Jack Lomas and Ben Knight were highlights in what was, in the end, a routine win.
