Men's 5ths end 2009 in second place

December 12 2009 | Mens 5th XI vs Belper 8ths | 3-1 Win

Lichfield Men’s 5th team played host to Belper 8ths at the King Edwards Pitch.

The match proved to be one of the most difficult of the season with a well organised Belper team being supported by an amazing goal keeping performance.

Lichfield’s play in the first half was of top quality with a number of good shots on goal being saved by Belpers’ in form keeper. Josh Thatcher came closest to scoring from a fiercely struck cross from be Eastland but he was unable to control the ball at the far post. Lichfield could have been awarded a penalty flick for a foot on the goal line but were rightly awarded a flick minutes later. Sam Greenbank calmly took on the challenge and swept the ball past the keeper with a well placed flick. Belper continued to try and get into the game but the first half ended 1:0.

In the second half Belper put the pressure on by moving forward. The pressure eventually told with them scoring from open play. As match went on Lichfield started to loose shape as they drove to get the win the first half deserved, and as a result became less effective.

As time started to run away Lichfield eventually started to move back to the a passing game but it was a moment of brilliance that moved them ahead. Harry Carpenter who had been making some fine runs from defence picked the ball up near the half way line. Driving forward into the ‘D’ he beat two players but got forced wide of the goal, still though he somehow managed to get a fierce shot on goal which beat the keeper and screamed into the net.

The game was finally tied up with Sam Greenbank scoring from another of what is becoming one of Lichfield 5ths trade mark passing moves.

The match was well umpired by Alastair Greenbank and Josh Bowen.

With the first half of matches complete Lichfield will end 2009 in second place and will be looking forward to a top of the table clash with the leaders West Bridgford as the first game of 2010. As this is the only team to beat them in the first half of the season the young team will be desperate to make amends on the home pitch and show west Bridford what they have learned so far.
