Lichfield Magic

March 21 2009 | Mens 2nd XI vs North Notts | 3-0 Win

Lichfield 2nds pulled a rabbit out of a hat last Saturday as they turned the form book upside down. North Notts arrived with nothing much to play for, against their already relegated hosts. However, it was the home side that magicked a performance to reflect their true qualities.

The reappearance of Tate in goal saw the back four galvanised from the start, and this provided a strong base for Lichfield’s attacking players. Man of the match Gleeson was the pick of the bunch in the post match analysis, but everyone played well. Lichfield moved the ball well and attacked at pace against a team who used the dark arts to try and prevent their hosts from taking advantage.

This did not stop Round from opening the scoring mid way through the first half after the ball was worked well around the North Notts ‘D’. The energy of Round and Parker up front, ably supported by Baldwyn Jnr, Astle, Soryal, Gleeson and Lewis created space and Lichfield were unfortunate not to extend their lead before half time.

Captain Baldwyn waved his wand at half time and galvanised the squad to complete the trick. Lichfield soaked up pressure, without the visitors really creating anything, and then struck on the break. Round collecting his brace as the North Notts keeper fluffed his lines. As ill discipline took hold of their opponents Lichfield struck a third and decisive blow, Baldwyn Jnr found Lewis in space who provided an assist to Parker. The shot from the top of the circle could have sliced someone in half, but thankfully nestled in the top corner.

Lichfield then were able to coast to a satisfying win, as the visitors continued to create their own problems, meaning that they finished the last 30 seconds of the match with only 9 players.

A celebration of hockey is expected this coming week in their final game of the season against already promoted Sutton Coldfield. The awards evening follows, see you there!
