Lichb left chasing their tails

March 14 2009 | Mens 2nd XI vs Rugby & East Warwick | 0-3 Lose

With nothing but pride left to play for, a young Lichfield side gave a good account of themselves and perhaps deserved a treat against Rugby & East Warwick HC.

Lichfield began well and were scrabbling against the Rugby back door with a few half chances and penalty corners. However they were left barking and beaten down midway through the first half when Rugby broke. Although the Rugby striker appeared not to make contact with the ball in the 'D', the Umpire blew for a goal, much to Lichfield's annoyance.

Captain for the day Baldwyn was then sent to the sidelines for growling and snapping ill discipline towards the home official. Lichfield battled well whilst temporarily down to 10 men and saw out the first half only one behind.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with Lichfield containing their hosts, but as the game wore on Rugby managed to break. The opposition striker sold Platt a huge dummy and chased the ball like a hound after a stick. With the Lichfield defence turned the Rugby players pounced and slotted home a good break away goal.

Lichfield again tried to bark and bite their way through the Rugby defences but failed and Rugby added to their woes with a late third goal.

Lichfield now have two games left and will no doubt continue to play as a team and with pride and enjoyment. This week they face another team with nothing to play for, although North Notts have the benefit of being becalmed in mid table.
