A Game to Forget

March 13 2010 | Ladies 2nd XI vs Barton | 1-7 Lose

Lichfield went into the game knowing that it was going to be a tough fight.  Within the first minute Barton latched onto a loose ball and drove through the Lichfield defence and rounded the Lichfield keeper to take a 1-0 lead. 

More punishment was to follow as the capable Barton forward fired the ball high into the goal, allowing the Lichfield keeper to only get a finger tip touch to the ball as it went in.

At half time Barton were leading 5-0.  But the scoreline didnt represent the true facts of the half as Lichfield had numerous chances of their own only to see them fly just wide of the post or be saved by the Barton keeper.

Lichfield rallied at half time and were determined not to give in as they felt they still  had something to give in this match.  The first 5 minutes of the second half was played in the Barton half as Lichfield put the Barton defence under pressure.  It then happened.  Lichfield were awarded a short corner and Anna Dowen duly fired the ball past the keeper to score. 

This fired up Lichfield but Barton stepped up into another gear and came at Lichfield again.  After some dubious control by the Barton forward, and wrong footing the keeper Barton scored again.  The final goal of the game came from a penalty stroke after the Lichfield keeper made a save and Barton fired in the rebound only to find the foot of a Lichfield defender on the line.

Lichfield were beaten by the undefeated league winners but will take pride in knowing that they scored against a team who had previously only conceded 6 goals all season.  The season finale against Leek next week will hopefully cap off a successful first season in Staffs 1.
