March 06 2010 | Ladies 2nd XI vs Cannock 3rds | 1-3 Lose

Lichfield went into the game with high expectations.  They beliieved that a win was within their reach.  Cannock however had other ideas and came out on the attack from the start.  The Lichfield defence were called into action on numerous occassions but they stood strong.  Then from a dubious short corner, which saw an infringement by a Cannock player, and the Lichfield goal keeper being impeded, Cannock were able to slot the ball into the goal to tae a 1-0 lead. 

Lichfield were not happy, and some beautiful link up play from Joy 'Annie' Mason, Katherine 'Im famous' Ellis and Laura Groves saw Lichfield put pressure on the Cannock goal.  Numerous times balls were fired into the D only to be stopped by the Cannock keeper.

Then it happened again. Cannock were awarded another short corner.  This time Cannock were able to score after the Lichfield keeper was unsighted as the ball flew into the far corner.

Lichfield were defiant.  They were not going to let Cannock have it all their own way so they kept 'Rolling' on looking for their first goal.  Jo 'Rizzo' Wilcox was unlucky on numerous occassions as a 'capable' Cannock keeper constantly denied her the goal she worked hard for.

Then the unthinkable happened.  Lichfield were awarded a short corner.  A slick ball was injected to the top of the D by Colette Edwards to Anna Dowen, who then slipped the ball right to Katherine 'Im Famous' Ellis.  Ellis then fired the ball across the D and Edwards tucked the ball home past the sprawled Cannock keeper.  Lichfield scored, from a short corner routine!  Yes that is right we scored from a short corner routine!

Lichfield were pumped up at this point and were looking for the equaliser.  Throwing everything they had at Cannock, Lichfield started to leave more space.  Then the ball broke through the midfield and left Lichfield keeper Claire 'Candy' Cresswell with a one on one.  The Cannock player wound up for the shot, the keeper made her self as big as possible to make the save and Cresswell was left praising the fact she was wearing her padding after making a point blank save. Ouch.

Both Cannock and Lichfield wanted more.  Lichfield were given more chances but just couldnt find the second goal they wanted so much.  Then from a defensive hit out, the speedy Cannock forward was gifted the ball and she ran into the D, this time rounded the Lichfield keeper and fired the ball home.  3 - 1 to Cannock.  Lichfield were desperate not to let Cannock have the final say but unfortunately the score line never changed.

Lichfield go into next weeks game against top of the league Barton knowing that they will have to work hard for every ball.  It will be tough but personal I feel Lichfield can stop Bartons winning streak.  Bring it on!
