Weekend of high quality hockey.

February 06 2010 | Ladies 2nd XI vs Walsall | 5-1 Win

Lichfield 5 Walsall 1

A local derby with bragging rights for the taking added an extra dimension to today’s fixture.

Lichfield started strong but were unable to convert numerous chances. Eventually Lichfield broke through and Ingrid Zanin was perfectly placed to slot home goal number 1. Almost an identical build up moments later and Ingrid claimed goal number 2. Lichfield defence was kept busy but Sarah Booth did an excellent job in commanding this space. Tireless work from Jo Grant and Anna Down in the midfield set up goal number 3 and a hat trick for Ingrid just before half time.

Walsall kept the pressure on and eventually were rewarded with a well worked goal that wrong footed Lichfield goalie Claire Cresswell.  This seemed to motivate the home team again and they connected well to produce a good team performance that saw Laura Groves produce a spectacular goal that she followed up with an even more spectacular forward flip in celebration. A penalty corner was then converted by Laura Groves for her second goal of the match.

A good team performance with some gymnastic flare should see Lichfield continue their climb up the league table.

Lichfield 2 Lewes 3

Sunday saw a home tie for the quarter finals of the national trophy put Lichfield at an advantage but the away team were well rested having not had a fixture yesterday meaning any advantage would only be slight.

Brighton were a very organised, clinical team who worked well together. It was a fast paced game from the start with neither side able to capitalise on a few chances. It was the home side who scored first with Sasha Layton converting a pass from Amy Booth.  However Brighton soon equalled the goal tally through a well converted penalty corner.

Brighton then increased the pressure and were able to take the score to 2-1 through another penalty corner just before half time.

The pace did not diminish in the second half and Brighton took the score to 3-1 through a well worked team effort.  Lewes continued to press the Lichfield defensive unit of Rae Turner, Angela Mason, Joy Mason, Sarah Booth and Claire Cresswell, but they stood strong and battled hard with each member throwing in last ditch tackles and saves off the line to prevent Lewes scoring again. Lichfield then fired on all cylinders and worked the ball from the back to allow Sasha Layton to convert goal number 2.  Lichfield continued to press hard and put on an extra forward to go for the equaliser.  Rachael Eastland sent a screamer of a pass across the D but it unfortunately alluded all the Lichfield attack.

Despite supreme effort from every single Lichfield player they were unable to find the back of the net and begrudgingly had to hand victory to Lewes on this occasion.  Lichfield should be proud of the way they played and they will now focus on continuing their climb up the league table.
