December 05 2009 | Ladies 2nd XI vs Stafford | 3-2 Win

Equal on points, only goal difference separated these two sides in the mid-table position of the Staffordshire League division 1. This match also heralded the start of the second half of the season and so only a win would suffice if Lichfield wanted to stay in contention.

 

Lichfield started strong and dominated the pitch. They had a number of early shots on goal and a handful of penalty corners but failed to find the back of the net.

 

Stafford then found their form and suddenly Lichfield were found chasing the game. Stafford were awarded a penalty corner and converted what was their first shot on goal from a lucky deflection.

 

Lichfield dug deep and worked hard to be rewarded with a well worked goal just before half time. Some excellent play from Anna Dowen and Joy Mason fed the ball into the ‘D’ and Jo Wilcox connected to draw the score to 1-1.

 

Concentration maintained and the second half demonstrated excellent play from both sides, neither willing to give the other a chance.

 

Momentary loss of concentration from Stafford saw a penalty flick expertely taken by Anna Dowen.  Lichfield then put the pressure on further and excellent passing through the midfield to Colette Edwards showed off some lovely hockey. Goal number three then followed. Annabel Habart shot on goal and Ingrid Zanin was well placed at the post to deflect home.

 

Easing off the pace allowed Stafford back into the game and they did not waste the opportunity as they thumped home goal number 2.

 

In her valiant attempt to save the goal Lichfield goalie, Claire Cresswell, injured her back and after a brief deliberation was deemed unfit to continue. Sarah Howell took up as goalie and a fast and furious final 10 minutes was all that stood in the way of victory.

 

Lichfield hung on to the narrow lead and they can go into the festive break with their heads held high but they need to ensure they match this performance in the New Year in order to maintain their league position.
