Strong team display

March 13 2010 | Ladies 1st XI vs Charnwood | 4-1 Win

Lichfield were determined to finish respectfully in the league and 2 wins from their final 2 games would be see them sit 4th or 5th in their first season in Division 2. Charnwood met Lichfield after an 11-0 drubbing at the hands of their opponents last week and were pretty sure to be facing relegation - with that in mind Lichfield knew they would have a battle on their hands from a team who had nothing to lose.

The start was well paced and focussed from Lichfield, moving the ball well across the midfield attempting to move the ball out and round, drawing Charnwood out of position. However it was a mistake that allowed Charnwood to drive into the Lichfield 25 area - the player crossing the ball and finding the faintest of touches on their player's stick, saw the ball trundle through the advancing keeper's legs and trickle over the line.

Lichfield were a little stunned but determined to ensure they made a means.  Rodgers and Vernon both coming close int he D with tme to shoot but missing narrowly.  Menmuir's trusty short corner strikes met a strong and skillful Charnwood keeper whose shot stopping ensured that Lichfield still failed to make it onto the score sheet.

It was with aplomb that player's player Susan Reeves (leachy!) broke their duck as  the ball was crossed to her on the left opf the D and she swept it home. This buoyed Lichfield and they continued to pile on the pressure.

There was still defensive work to do as the Charnwood forwards' pace was decieving and tackles from Turner, White, Menmuir, Gleeson and Grant were all vital in keeping the scoreline down. On three occasions Charnwood failed to make the most of 1 to 1 chances on goal.

The second half Lichfield settle into the game more confidently, with pace but not panic. Menmuir scoring after a short corner was defended well, but she called for the ball with only one thing in mind and a first time sweep of the ball saw it rise high and loop over the hapless keeper.

Rodgers picked up a brace as she 'lineker style' hung about in the D causing all sorts of problems and tidying up loose balls.

Lichfield have the ability to score goals against any team in this league along with the abiity to beat any team in this league - near misses and disaster button moments perhaps being the frustration.

The final game of the season is at home against Hinckley - a strong side that will test Lichfield's strength and ability. With pride at stake, Lichfield will need one of their best performances.
