Crikey O'Reilly...never again

February 20 2010 | Ladies 1st XI vs Telford | 5-4 Win

On the back of a tough defeat and hard game, Lichfield played the postponed game v Telford. Although Telford are holding up Division 2, Lichfield knew full well that they couldn;t take any liberties and needed to dominate the game and take the points.

A great start suggested that they would quickly press their domination - a sublime pass from Rachel Eastland to young Jas Vernon was met by Nicky Mills. Telford however had other ideas as the forward ploughed through the centre of the field, holding of challenges and getting a shot off, catching the keeper wrongfooted and unable to get to a ball close to her feet.

Menmuir took the control back as her trademark shortcorner allowed Lichfield to steady the ship.  Lichfield had opportunities but still appeared to lack that real clinical touch. In the D they suffered againas the striker was given time to react to a rebound and reverse stick, drive the ball past the keeper's outstretched left leg.

Not one to be outdone, Menmuir hit her double decker with another short corner strike....probloem was that Lichfield still insisted on making this a real challenge - guilty of giving the ball away and diving into challenges. Milward a victim of the umpires whistle and cards as she failed to restrict her vim and vigour - seeing 10 minutes of the game from the dugout after a green then a yellow card.

The game became more heated and Lichfield didn't show the calmness and serenity that they know they must show in games like this.

Telford equalised again after a short corner strike found its way into the bottom left of the Lichfield goal.  Feeling a little left out of the scoring party - Vernon popped up ,Sasha Layton laying the groundwork at the top of the D, and fired the ball with venom into the goal.  Determined to make this a game that came with a health warning for spectators, Lichfield conceeded again. 4-4

In vengeance for her time off the pitch, Milward scored the winner with aplomb, a well timed pass across from Mills found Milward primed and ready to sweep home - doubtful anyone in its path would have made any difference to the result. 5-4

This was Lichfield at their best and worst. A real gritty, determined 70 min performance ensured that they got there in the end but will hope never to produce such a soft nougaty performance again.

Player's player was Jess Tibbet Taylor whose efforts and driving runs served to lift the spirits of players and spectators and more importantly cause real problems for Telford.

2 games remain with Lichfield hoping to hold a decent mid table position whilst finishing with a positive sprint for the line
