A Poacher's paradise

January 23 2010 | Ladies 1st XI vs Ashbourne | 6-1 Win

After the white stuff hung around far too long causing a 7 week break - Lichfield travelled to Ashbourne for a well needed friendly runout. Ashbourne a team that have always provided a tough 'friendly' game would hopefully do the same without the usual injuries suffered by both teams.

Lichfield started at a good pace and put early pressure on the under strength side.  This pressure paying off as Menmuir struck for goal drawing the keeper into a a low save - the resulting rebound hit by Rodgers who saw it slam into the foot of a defender on the line.  Up stepped the 'hattrick' heroine of the day Milward- who made no mistake with a precision flick into the right corner.

Shortly afterwards Vernon made it 2 as she tootled round the defense after a great ball from Menmuir to Gleeson to Leach - scything through the Ashbourne field.

The third was added by Baggy Layton after another pacy team move and link up play between Gleeson and Layton.  Layton cut inside and headed toward the D - composure was key as she avoided the onruching keeper - allowed the keepr to dive and straight from the Wilkinson texbook she rounded the keeper and stroked the ball into the goal.

Lichfield wanted more from the second half but played a nervy opening 5 minutes that saw the Ashbourne captain drive through several players and weave herself enough space to push the ball past the helpless Lichfield captain in goal.

Ashbourne had other chances and could have pushed Lichfield further but close misses and stoic defending ensured that Lichfield got themselves back on track - Rodgers tidying up after a goalmouth melee - 4-1

Lichfield's 5th came from a sublime penalty corner routine - well worked between Menmuir and Milward. The ball fired out from Milward then returned at pace by Menmuir - Chopper Milward slapping home, leaving the line defenders left with no chance and with the thoguht that face masks may be a worthwhile future purchase.

Milward added her third as she played goalhanger as Lichfield continued to pressure.  Baggy Layton fired the ball towards the goalmouth - or was it? The decision will be sorely contested between the two players for a long time but in true Lineker/Shearer stylee Milward had 'made sure' by poking the ball home.

Lichfield restart their league campaign on Saturday with a 12.30 home game against an improved Belper side. Hopefully finding their scoring boots today and gelling back together as a whole unit - will give them further confidence that they should fear no opposition.
