Bailey Hits Treble To Smoke Players

March 13 2010 | Mens 2nd XI vs Players | 4-0 Win

Lichfield recorded a very simple win against toothless opposition last Saturday. Players HC turned up just in time for push-back, and never really got going for the entire match. Fortunately for them, the Lichfield firing squad was also some way off the mark, preventing an embarrassing loss.

A bright start from the hosts saw them apply lots of early pressure. The break-through came with little over five minutes on the watch. Lewis was allowed a great deal of space on the right flank and pirouetted into the ‘D’. His shot was saved, but Bailey pounced on the rebound to slot home an easy first.

Ten minutes into the match the home team made it two-nil. More Lichfield pressure resulted in a penalty corner, and Mason struck home his second goal in as many matches. The ease with which Lichfield began to break down Players was perhaps their undoing. As chances presented themselves Lichfield began to take shots from poor angles and allowed the visitors to escape without real punishment. Skipper Lewis had identified this as a chance for the forwards to score heavily, but wastefulness in attack from all players meant that Players escaped lightly.

Bailey notched a further goal before the break to add to his tally, but realistically Lichfield should have been approaching double figures at this point.

Lewis’ target of a further three goals after the break was clearly too much for Lichfield. Bailey completed his hat-trick following a slick penalty corner routine five minutes into the second half. However, this proved to be the last time the scoreboard ticked over during the game, much to the chagrin of the massed crowds.

The home defence was given little trouble .Debutant Jackson and promising youngster George can both take positive results from the match as they looked assured when called upon, and enjoyed plenty of pitch time.

Lichfield will need to sharpen up their finishing when they visit Coalville next weekend, as a tight contest is likely to be in store, and as they push to ensure a respectable fourth placed league finish.
