Lichfield sunk by last minute goal

February 27 2010 | Mens 2nd XI vs Coventry & NW | 2-3 Lose

Lichfield 2nd XI entered this weeks game against Coventry & North Warwick looking to avenge their 7-1 humbling earlier in the season.

With skipper Lewis again called up for service with the 1st’s it was left to stand in Clarke to lead from the front.

In a hotly contested game which featured numerous poor challenges and disputes with the umpire this was not going to be a game for the faint hearted.

The visitors took the lead when the Lichfield defence stopped after the initial air shot went unpunished only for the unmarked striker to finish from close range.  Lichfield were creating chances of their own, but were always wary of the counter attack against the pacy Cov side.

The second half began in a similar vain and Lichfield drew level when good work from Ndoro down the right saw Bailey slot the ball under the keeper after an initial scramble in the D.

Vice skipper Baldwyn then saw yellow after conceding a penalty corner but numbers were soon evened up when a Cov forward was also sin binned following an altercation with keeper Lax.  Gleeson felt aggrieved when a strong run into the D was ended with a  double somersault with pike went unnoticed by either umpire.

Cov regained their lead after both players returned to the field after the enthusiastic midfielder finished off a flowing move.  Lichfield came again and drew level after another goal mouth scramble saw Parker finish off his reverse side.

With time dwindling down and a draw looking the most likely result, Cov struck their killer blow as they capitalised on an error down the left to find their captain in the D who placed his shot beyond Lax

Lichfield still had a chance to draw level again when a penalty corner in the final seconds saw a shot by Mason narrowly missing the far post.

So Clarke tasted defeat for the first time this year when in temporary charge and will still be proud in how the team stuck to their task for the whole 70 mins

Next week see’s the team travel to second place Chesterfield.
