Lichfield continue strong start to 2010...

January 23 2010 | Mens 1st XI vs West Bridgford | 7-3 Win

Following the successful return to the second half of the season Lichfield travelled to West Bridgeford looking to add another three points to their impressive season thus far. With the same side starting again, Lichfield started brightly with good movement from the forwards and clever approach play.

It was Lichfield who deservedly took the lead with a inch perfect pass from Paul “The General” Campbell which found Gilbert in acres of space a the top of the D, who as all good forwards do placed the ball into the bottom right hand of the goal. From the first goal, the second came almost instantly through the lively Gilbert. After a relatively easy half for Lichfield, West Bridgeford came out with more purpose and intensity, and pulled a scrappy goal back. Lichfield responded almost instantly through Paul Campbell, who finished well from a clever short corner routine.

Throughout the second half, Lichfield struggled to play with consistency for any prolonged periods of time, either playing excellent, flowing hockey or scrappy and below par. West Bridgeford pulled another goal back to make the game more interesting. Through the ball being lost in the middle of the park Bridgeford were able to counter and manipulate a two on one in the D which was converted. Almost like a game of cat and mouse, Lichfield pulled further in front through Gilbert once more who following nice build up play and a neat touch in the D by Danny Campbell trickled the ball over the line from the touch of the post. To carry on with the general way of play in the second half West Bridgeford scored from a short corner, with the ball being edged over the line following a scrappy and contested lead up.

This was to be Bridgefords last goal in the game, as Lichfield and in particular Martin Webb took advantage of a tiring and open defence. It was his build up that led to the fifth goal for Lichfield. Webb attacked down the right, and after beating his marker slipped the ball for birthday boy Allister Gardiner who welcomed the open goal and slotted the ball into the empty net with ease. Incredulous!

Webb continued to run riot up front and after neat play in the middle between Gardiner and Davies, Danny Campbell found Webb in the D, only for him to be brought down by the keeper and a flick to be given. The keeper was rightly given a yellow card, and had to leave the pitch, leaving a Bridgeford player with just a helmet on the goal line. Billingham as he had done twice the week before successfully converted the flick and Lichfield edged out of sight. To top off the rout, Lichfield’s ever present Paul Campbell struck a short corner into the bottom right hand corner of the goal to take the score to 7-3.

Lichfield took the three points to maintain second position in the league and to maintain their 100% start to 2010.
