League Champions!

Lichfield ladies 2nd XI       5       Wolves and Tett    2

 

Although promotion was secure, the pressure was still on and the team needed to keep their nerve as at least a draw was required from today’s match to ensure Lichfield were crowned champions of their division.

 

The home side started strongly and Jayne Roberts triumphed with thumping shot from a penalty corner to take the lead 1-0. An immediate counter attack however from Wolves drew the score level at 1-1.

 

With the title race now going right to the wire, Lichfield dug deep and produced some excellent hockey. They were eventually rewarded with two more penalty corners, which were once again deftly dealt with by Jayne Roberts who gained her hat trick with some superb skills and inch perfect shots on goal.

 

Tireless work from the whole team continued, culminating in a goal from Ingrid Zanin who was perfectly placed on the goal post to slot home goal number 4 for the home side.

 

4-1 up at half time and Lichfield were cruising towards the awards ceremony but Wolves remained defiant and goal keeper Amy Caddy did well to prevent the away team from capitalising on their attacks, until eventually they broke through and took the score to 4-2.

 

Lichfield gathered themselves, summoned the last of their energy reserves and with grit and determination attacked again to allow Colette Simpson a sure shot on target that Jo Wilcox had the final say on to ensure goal number 5 counted and thus complete the demolition of their opponents.

 

This tightly knit team have showed excellent character and dedication to lead the division from the start of the season and they thoroughly deserve the glory of being crowned champions and gaining promotion. Next season will bring greater challenges but if the work ethic and teamwork continues, this team should be confident they can rise to the challenge of hockey in a higher division.

Captian, Angela Mason, is very proud of the teams  performance this season which has been truly outstanding!
