March 21 2009 | Ladies 2nd XI vs Triton | 4-2 Win

Despite having the knowledge that promotion to Staffs Division One was already guaranteed, Lichfield Ladies 2nd team approached this game in their usual determined manner. Their sights now rightly set on the league championship place. With only 3 teams left in this fight and separated by just 6 points, Lichfield needed the win.

 

Due to illness and injuries Lichfield were not able to field their full squad for this game and travelled to Alsager with just 11 players. It was Triton who made their mark on the game first after a free hit was missed judged by 2 Lichfield players, deflected on and into the path of a Triton forward that slipped the ball into the goal, to the delight of the home team.

 

Irritated by this, but not unduly concerned, Lichfield settled into the game and started to push the whole team forward in an attacking formation. They held this approach for the whole of the game. Midfield players moved the ball well throughout, the forward line worked well creating scoring opportunities and the defence held firm and kept the Triton attack at bay. Patience and persistence prevailed and Colette Simpson increased her season goal tally by a further 2 goals. Jo Wilcox returned to form with a well taken goal and Rachael Eastland sent in a classy, well positioned, shot to take Lichfield’s total to 4.

 

The goal of the game went to Triton towards the end of the match when a few hit just outside their attacking D was cannoned in, took a deflection from a Triton stick and rocketed in past the keeper.

 

With the league season drawing to its close next week the battle for supremacy goes right to the last game. Next week either Lichfield or Leek will be crowned as league champions. This will make for an exciting home game against Wolves, in which Lichfield intend to win to maintain their 2 point lead over Leek!
