A win today would guarantee promotion for the home team so hopes and expectations were high right from the start.

 

Stafford were strong in defence and quick on the attack and Lichfield soon found themselves chasing the game as nerves came into play. With composure regained, hard work from the midfield and some determination, Lichfield started to dominate the away team penalty area. The Stafford goalkeeper was kept busy with several shots on target from Jo Wilcox. Eventually a penalty corner was deftly dealt with by Rachael Eastland who flicked the ball over the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.

 

The home team still struggled to settle fully into the game but the defence remained strong throughout and Stafford had few opportunities to attack beyond the Lichfield 25 yard line or challenge Amiee Caddy, the young Lichfield Keeper.

 

The second half was dominated by Lichfield with Donna Critchley and Angela Mason teaming up well to marshal the centre defence and some excellent link up work from Sarah Howell, down the right side of the pitch to Anna Dowen. Rachel Eastland and Sally Jeffries, who were both first-rate in their performances, continued to propel play towards the away goal.

 

A penalty corner was awarded and Sarah Caddy struck from the top of the D to find the bottom corner of the net.

 

Ingrid Zanin and Collette Simpson worked well down the left to keep the pressure on and both were unlucky not to score on the day.

 

With promotion now assured, Lichfield now need to remain focussed on the final 2 games to ensure they are rightly crowned, champions of the Staffordshire League Division 2.
