3 points was all that was needed. A home game, a howling wind, a bit of hail and a few dedicated supporters were the ingredients thrown into to the ‘promotion’ recipe as Lichfield Ladies 1st XI faced Shrewsbury; a team that hadn’t survived the vicious relegation of the Feeder west league but had battled well against teams and hadn’t really suffered from any sort of ‘drubbing’.
The game opened with Lichfield setting their pace and pounding the Shrews defence. With Gleeson, Mason, Menmuir and Wilkinson working well as a unit at the back, Lichfield built the plays up allowing the midfield of Turner, Rodgers, Milward and Taylor Tibbet opportunity to infiltrate the opposition half.
Lichfield nerves were settled as the ball found its way to Nic George in the D, a pirhouette and swish later saw the keeper frozen as the ball whizzed by into the goal. A ten minute period of lower pace allowed Shrewsbry to get back into the game. Rash defending in the D saw a short corner awarded. Shrews working the ball well out to a player on the left who drilled the ball into the bottom right of Lowe’s goal.
The half time talk used words like ‘season defining’ and composure. It seemed it did the trick. Lichfield filtered back on to the pitch remembering last week’s win and last season’s devastating loss against Leek that saw them leap over Lichfield to the one promotion spot, anything but a win today meant Cannock was likely to do the same.
It didn’t take long for Lichfield show tenacity. Nic George again finding the goal with a little help from a Shrews player. Bazeley also managed to latch on to a loose ball in the D. The crowd was loud and immense giving the players the further lift they needed to see the game off. George finished her season off with a hat trick and securing her ‘season top goalscorer’ award. The second half saw White return to the fold and back into her defensive duties. Bazeley produced a goal of skill and poise as a through ball from Menmuir found Leach then Bazeley. She headed toward the oncoming keeper – drew her wide and smashed the ball home. With minutes remaining, Lichfield earned several short corners and saw a slip left tactic allow Milward acres of space to slam the ball in.
Season defining? I think so.
Final score = 6-1. Final result = promotion to Division 2. Final feelings = indescribable.
