March 07 2009 | Ladies 1st XI vs Tamworth | 3-0 Win

Lichfield ended their game on Saturday worthy victors over local rivals – feisty Tamworth.  The game always prom ised to be a cracker as Lichfield fight to stay top and win the only promotion place and Tamworth needing victory to stay in the top 6 – securing their place in the Feeder West league for next season.

The first half was quite evenly balanced as both keepers were drawn into action, the Tamworth keeper proving a difficult obstacle as she thwarted many attacks including an excellent save from a Nic George strike.  Jas Vernon also had her weaving run halted as the keeper bravely dived at her feet nicking the ball away with her stick.

Player’s player Racheal Wilkinson was immense in defense snuffing out the Tamworth winger and frustrating any forward attacks.  Lichfield keeper Zoe Lowe prevented a ceratin goal from a short corner strike by sticking out a right leg and turning the ball high round the post. Lowe also prevented the nippy Tamworth striker from scoring as she ran unchallenged into the D – but was pushed wide and a slight touch off the keeper’s stick was enough for her to veer off track and feebly push ball wide.

The play of the half was the opening goal from Lichfield which saw the ball fall to Jess Taylor Tibbet who unleashed a strike worthy of any goal of the season award. The Tamworth keeper having no chance as the ball flashed across her goalmouth and nestled in the corner. The timing couldn’t have been better as the half time whistle blew allowing Lichfield to finish the half in the ascendancy.

The second half started with gusto and an early striker’s  goal from Nic George served to raise the Tamworth temperature but calm the Lichfield nerves. George capitalising on a rebound and deftly manouevering the ball onto the post and spin into the goalmouth.

The team performance that Lichfield showed today was outstanding and was rewarded with a 3rd goal, another blistering strike from ‘the paper boy who always delivers’ Taylor Tibbet seemed to be heading just outside the left post but Sasha ‘I never swish’ Layton was on hand to deflect the ball into the goal to take any last wind out of Tamworth.

3 games to go. 1 point clear. Bridgnorth, Cannock, Shrewsbury – all in Lichfield’s hands.3 wins = promotion.
