Official Opening of New Pitch

Lichfield Hockey Club is thrilled to have their new Astro turf opened at their club house on Eastern Avenue by Imran Sherwani the Olympic Gold medallist on Sunday, 21 October.

Dave Willenbruch, chairman of Lichfield Hockey Club, stated that:

“This gives the club the chance to continue its expansion, at the moment the club runs 10 men’s teams and six ladies and was finding it difficult with a lack of appropriate pitches. This will mean that the demand for competitive hockey will be recognised and be better satisfied.

Rauf Mirza, Chair of the West Midlands Regional Sports Board, in recognising the award to the club said:

“The club has already achieved so much to develop hockey in the area without having a pitch on its own site. With their new Astroturf pitch, part funded through an award made by the West Midlands Regional Sports Board from the Community Investment Fund, they will be able to undertake more development work. It is excellent that their aims are to provide opportunities for disabled players and to increase the number of women and girls players, as well as the all round increase in the take up of hockey in their area. I wish all involved in club every success.”

This new facility has been funded by members of the club, England Hockey, National Lottery funding through Sport England, Staffordshire Environmental Trust, The Foundation for Sport and Art, The Swinfen Broun Trust and local County Councillors.

Neal Critchley, chairman of the joint Lichfield Cricket & Hockey Club said, “This was the next stage in the development of this multi-sport facility for the people of Lichfield District and this area of the West Midlands”
